Landscaping in Red Lodge, MT
At 5,588 feet, Red Lodge gets about 142 inches of snow a year and 23 inches of precipitation, against 14 in the Yellowstone Valley. That changes almost every decision in a landscape plan. CW Designs designs and builds landscapes for Red Lodge conditions, from snow storage and roof shed to slope, spring melt and a short build season.

Built for Red Lodge Conditions
Red Lodge sits at the foot of the Beartooths in Carbon County, with Rock Creek running along the east side of town. Lots here carry grade, winters are long and heavy, and the growing season is shorter than anything in the valley. A landscape that works in Billings will not necessarily survive up here, which is why we design to the specific site rather than to a template.

What Red Lodge Landscapes Have to Handle
Red Lodge is not Billings with better views. At 5,588 feet the town gets roughly 142 inches of snow a year and about 23 inches of precipitation, against 14 in the Yellowstone Valley. The season is shorter, the freeze-thaw swings are harder, and many lots carry real grade heading up toward the Beartooths.
Snow load and snow storage
Roughly 142 inches a year has to go somewhere. Plows and shovels pile it, and whatever it lands on takes the weight. We plan snow storage into the design so new plantings and lighting are not sitting in the pile, and we set hardscape edges where a plow can find them.
Roof shed
Snow coming off a metal roof will destroy a shrub bed, crack a paver and bury a walkway in one afternoon. Where we place patios, beds and lighting on a Red Lodge property starts with where the snow lands.
Slope and spring melt
Properties on the mountain front carry real grade, and 23 inches of annual precipitation released largely at once in the spring melt has to be routed. Retaining walls here do a structural job, not a decorative one, and drainage behind the wall matters more than the face you see.
Elevation and plant selection
The 2023 USDA map puts Red Lodge in zone 5a, revised up from 4b, but a zone map does not capture a north-facing lot at 5,800 feet with a short season and late frosts. We specify planting to the site, not to the map.
A short build season
The construction window here is shorter than in Billings. Design work happens over the winter so the build can start as soon as the ground allows. Homeowners who call in January get on the spring schedule.
Red Lodge Landscaping Questions
Do you actually come out to Red Lodge?
Yes. Red Lodge is about an hour from our Billings shop and well inside our service area. We schedule mountain projects in blocks so the crew works up there consistently rather than driving back and forth.
Can you build on a steep Red Lodge lot?
Yes. Sloped ground is one of the reasons homeowners here call us. We use retaining walls, terracing and grading to turn an unusable hillside into yard you can stand on, with drainage designed for spring melt.
Will a paver patio survive Red Lodge winters?
It will if the base is right. At this elevation a paver patio sees severe freeze-thaw cycling. Base depth and compaction determine whether it is still flat in 20 years, and that is the part nobody can inspect once the job is done.
